Research assistant position in metabolism-disrupting chemicals, gut microbiome and metabolic health

Website Karolinska Institutet

Do you want to contribute to better health for all?

Join our dynamic team at Karolinska Institutet (KI), where we combine expertise in molecular and systems toxicology, metabolism, immunology, microbiology, and bioinformatics to address pressing challenges in environmental health. As part of the NEMESIS project—an interdisciplinary and collaborative research initiative—you will engage in multi-omics integration and mechanistic toxicology research. You will also benefit from KI’s strong training environment, including seminars, courses, and workshops that support professional development and foster interdisciplinary networking.

Your mission

You will contribute to an interdisciplinary project investigating how exposure to metabolism-disrupting chemicals (MDCs) alters gut microbiota composition and function across humans, mouse, and zebrafish models, and how these alterations influence host metabolic outcomes.

The work combines microbiome biology with advanced data-driven approaches, including univariate and multivariate statistics, feature selection, and machine-learning methods, to identify microbiome signatures and biomarkers predictive of endocrine-disruptor-induced metabolic disruption.

Your responsibilities will include preprocessing and analyzing microbiome data from experimental models, performing integrative multi-omics analyses linking gut microbiota and host metabolism, and identifying patterns that will be further explored and validated in human cohort studies. The position is temporary for 12 months.

Your profile

You have strong programming skills in R, experience with MIA, and familiarity with pipelines such as BIOSiftr for functional annotation of shotgun metagenomics data are considered merits. Fluency in both Swedish and English is required. A Master’s degree in a relevant field is also considered meritorious.

What do we offer?
