About TU Darmstadt
TU Darmstadt stands for excellent and relevant science. We play a key role in shaping profound global transformation processes – from the energy transition to artificial intelligence – through outstanding findings and forward-looking study programs. We concentrate our cutting-edge research in three fields: Energy and Environment , Information and Intelligence , and Matter and Materials .
The Technical University of Darmstadt (TU Darmstadt) is firmly rooted in the Frankfurt Rhine-Main metropolitan region and is characterized by its cosmopolitan outlook and strong international orientation. As one of the three Rhine-Main Universities (RMU), TU Darmstadt cooperates closely with Goethe University Frankfurt and Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz in research, studies and teaching, the promotion of young researchers, and knowledge transfer to business and society. TU Darmstadt is actively committed to diversity and equality. We consider diversity to be key to creative solutions and societal progress.
As an institution, we place great value on a dialogue-oriented and appreciative leadership culture, characterized by innovation, the promotion of our employees and trusting cooperation.
About our area
The Department of Chemistry at TU Darmstadt is part of the Rhine-Main University Alliance (RMU) and offers scientific solutions to many of today’s challenges. It focuses on both basic and applied research. Researchers in the Department of Chemistry are active in three main research areas:
You can find more information on this topic on our research profile website . We offer unique opportunities for interdisciplinary research, as our expertise encompasses not only biochemistry but also inorganic, organic, physical, theoretical, technical, and macromolecular chemistry. This forms the basis for our strong collaborative research. Our central location in the heart of the Rhine-Main-Neckar region provides extensive points of contact and excellent opportunities for cooperation with the chemical and pharmaceutical industries.
The development of biologics is a key technology for current and future drug development. It also plays a central role in the research focus area “Drug Modalities – Tailoring Molecules to Improve Health” at the Department of Chemistry.
Your tasks
The Department of Chemistry at the Technical University of Darmstadt is seeking to fill a full professorship (W3) in Therapeutic Biomacromolecules as soon as possible .
The focus of the experimental biochemical research of the advertised professorship will be on the engineering of pharmacologically active biomacromolecules , complementing the existing expertise within the department and further developing the research focus on “Drug Modalities .” Proteins and protein conjugates are the preferred modalities. Other modalities are conceivable, provided a clearly identifiable chemical and molecularly defined component can be identified and therapeutically applicable biomacromolecules are developed and experimentally investigated. Modern computer-aided methods, e.g., for predicting and designing biomacromolecular structures, functions, and/or pharmacological properties, will be employed in conjunction with experimental methods.
Possible research areas include:
- Development of complex multifunctional biomacromolecules (also in combination with small molecules, e.g. antibody-drug conjugates or bispecific antibodies)
- Biotechnological delivery technologies, in particular active intracellular uptake of biological macromolecules
- Therapeutic enzymes, especially with tailored regulation
- Biomolecular drugs with context-dependent activities
Participation in existing collaborative projects such as ProxiDRUGS, a connection to the profile topic Synthetic Biology in the research field M+M of TU Darmstadt, as well as collaborations within the Rhine-Main University Alliance (RMU) including opportunities to connect with clinics and institutes and initiatives such as RMU Excite – Health are expressly desired.
The professorship is intended to represent the full breadth of teaching in biochemistry. Teaching responsibilities include the dedicated and independent organization and delivery of courses in biochemistry for the German-language degree programs B.Sc. Chemistry, B.Sc. Biomolecular Engineering, the bilingual degree program M.Sc. Chemistry, and the future English-language M.Sc. Biomolecular Engineering.
You are responsible for leading and developing your employees in accordance with our leadership guidelines .
Your profile
We are seeking a distinguished international researcher whose suitability for independent research has been demonstrated by a doctorate and either a habilitation or equivalent qualifications. Of particular importance are relevant publications in international journals, corresponding teaching experience in biochemistry, successful acquisition of external funding, experience leading a research group, and a willingness to engage in academic self-governance. We explicitly encourage applications from researchers who do not yet hold a tenured professorship.
The other hiring requirements are governed by Sections 67 and 68 of the Hessian Higher Education Act.
TU Darmstadt and its surrounding region, as part of the Frankfurt Rhine-Main metropolitan area, are characterized by a vibrant international atmosphere. A key element of this is a cosmopolitan environment with functional multilingualism at our university. Therefore, very good English skills and – after three years at the latest – good German language skills are expected.
This job posting is open to all genders. TU Darmstadt is committed to increasing the proportion of female professors and therefore expressly encourages female scientists to apply!
