Position of Postdoctoral in experimental validation and control of hybrid power plants

Website Technical University of Denmark

DTU Department of Wind and Energy Systems inaugurated Risø HPP in October 2024. Risø HPP is a Hybrid Power Plant facility based on two 225kW wind turbines, two 185kW PV systems and a 1155kWh / 250kW battery system. The facility is located on DTU’s Risø campus. We are right now working with TotalEnergies from France to purchase a 1000kVA controllable grid interface (CGI) which will enable us to test Risø HPP when it is connected to different electrical power grids, which we will emulate with the CGI. We are looking for a Postdoc who will be engaged in experimental research and model validation, focusing on models for the grid connection of the HPP. So far, we are working on RMS, EMT and frequency domain (harmonics) types of models. The candidate is expected to have experience with RMS and EMT modelling of converter-based energy resources and with experimental hardware in the loop (HIL) systems.

Responsibilities and qualifications
The main purpose of the post-doc position is to strengthen the experimental validation of our hybrid power plant research and to integrate this new experimental opportunity in our research and teaching activities.

The postdoc will work with the following tasks:

  • Further development of our hybrid power plant simulation models and controllers, mainly the plant level controllers taking into account the interaction with commercial wind turbine, PV systems, battery system and their associated converters.
  • Implement controllers in Risø HPP real time environment which is based on an OPAL-RT real time simulator communicating with wind turbines, PV systems and battery systems.
  • Develop Power HIL (PHIL) applications for the CGI real time simulation system to emulate for instance low inertia and weak transmissions grids with the CGI
  • Assist in our courses and project supervision regarding hybrid power plants
  • Assist with fund raising

We therefore give priority to qualifications within the following areas, including dynamic modelling and control of hybrid power plants, requirements for grid connection of renewable generation, experience with HIL systems and experimental test setups, and strong competences in communication systems as well as coding experience (C++ and Python).

As a formal qualification, you must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent).
