Polyphenol exposure and cardiometabolic outcomes among breast cancer survivors – a prospective biomarker study.

OVERVIEW

Polyphenol intake protects against cardiovascular diseases in the general population, while not much is known about its health effects among cancer survivors. We will use a large prospective study among breast cancer survivors to evaluate associations between polyphenol exposure (biomarkers and intake) in relation to cardiometabolic disease risks.

Polyphenols have been shown to protect against several cardiometabolic diseases in the general population. Many cancer survivors have increased cardiometabolic risks, in part due to long-term side effects of cancer treatments. However, it is not known whether polyphenols may mitigate cardiometabolic disease risks among people with cancer. At the same time, there is preliminary evidence to suggest that certain polyphenols may inhibit the efficiency of cancer treatments, but larger human studies are lacking.

We will evaluate associations between polyphenol exposure, assessed by comprehensive questionnaire and biomarker data, and risks of common cardiometabolic outcomes among breast cancer survivors. These outcomes include myocardial infarction, stroke, and diabetes, but also cardiovascular as well as overall mortality. Data from a cohort of 2,000 women, who were followed up for more than 15 years after diagnosis, will be used. Potential interactions between polyphenols and cancer treatments will be analysed in relation to prospective outcomes.

The minimum academic requirement for admission to a research degree programme is normally an Upper Second Class Honours degree in a relevant subject from a UK or ROI HE provider, or an equivalent qualification acceptable to the University.
