The Institute of Food and One Health is seeking to fill the following position as of August 1, 2026: Research Associate (PhD position) in the field of Instrumental Analytics (salary group 13 TV-L, 50%)
The position is limited to 3 years (with the possibility of extension) and offers the opportunity to pursue a doctorate.
Your position at a glance
The research focus of the Department of Molecular Food Chemistry and Food Development lies in instrumental analysis and the investigation of the bioactivity of food components. In the newly approved project “Fruit Juices and Fruit Juice Mixtures as Modulators of the Intestinal Barrier, Inflammatory Parameters, and in Regeneration after Physical Exertion,” funded by the Research Association of the German Food Industry (FEI), various metabolites in fruit juices and human samples will be analytically determined after consumption. This collaboration is being carried out in cooperation with the German Sport University Cologne and various industry partners, particularly from the fruit juice industry.
Your responsibilities include the following tasks:
- Analysis of fruit juices using chromatographic methods (HPLC-PDA, LC-qToF-MS)
- quantitative determination of secondary metabolites from human samples
- independent software-supported data analysis and documentation
- Presentation of results at national/international conferences
- Publication of research results in peer-reviewed journals
- Supervision of students (seminars, internships) as well as bachelor’s and master’s theses
- Participation in university self-governance
Who are we looking for?
The prerequisite for employment is a completed university degree in natural sciences, ideally in the field of (food) chemistry or instrumental analysis.
In addition, you possess the following qualifications:
- Practical experience in the use of instrumental analytical methods, such as HPLC, LC-MS, GC, is desirable.
- Knowledge of food is desirable
- Very good knowledge of bioinformatics and statistical methods (e.g., GraphPad, JMP, SPSS) is required.
- very good German and English skills, both spoken and written.
- very good computer skills, confident use of common programs such as Office applications for data analysis, graphical representation and written work, and molecular modeling programs
- Good organizational and communication skills, initiative, resilience, flexibility and teamwork skills
