The project
The antiviral protein MORC3 plays an important role in the cellular defense against invading pathogens. In this project, we investigate how MORC3 restricts viruses during infection in mouse and cell culture models.
The project will combine a range of experimental approaches, including CRISPR screening, viral infection studies, and molecular biology techniques such as flow cytometry, qPCR, and next-generation sequencing (NGS). Depending on their interests, the student will also have the opportunity to learn additional approaches, including immunohistochemistry, live-cell imaging of viral infection, and the analysis of cellular and tissue readouts following in vivo infection.
This project offers the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in innate immunology, virology, functional genomics, and molecular biology, while contributing to our understanding of host-pathogen interactions during viral infection.
The candidate
The ideal candidate should have the following qualifications:
- Curiosity, high motivation and a strong interest in immunology and virology
- Excellent organizational and communication skills
- Experience in mammalian cell culture and standard molecular biology techniques (e.g. PCR, cloning)
Applications with a cover letter outlining your research interests, academic transcript and your CV should be sent to nanette.becht[at]imp.ac.at. Applications are considered until the position is filled. The student will receive a monthly stipend. This position is for a 10-12-month Master’s thesis project, starting early 2027.
