Subject area description

The position is within the area of pharmacology, meaning the study of drugs, which refers to all parts of the subject, such as the mechanisms of action of drugs, mechanisms for the occurrence of drug side effects, the development of new potential drugs and the clinical use of drugs.

Duties

The holder of the position must conduct research with translational potential that can be attributed to the subject. The research should have good potential to generate external grants. Research is the most important and extensive task. The holder of the position must also be able to teach in Swedish and/or English at both basic and advanced level at educational programs where pharmacology forms part of the teaching, i.e. most programs at the Sahlgrenska Academy. In addition, the holder of the position must be able to teach the subject at PhD courses. The holder of the position must also be able to supervise Master’s students and doctoral students in the subject. As a holder of the position you may be required to perform certain administrative tasks common to the section, primarily course management but also departmental and academy-wide tasks.

An employee who lacks higher education pedagogical training is expected to complete such training within one year of starting the position.

For promotion, the applicant is required to have acquired proficiency in Swedish, both written and spoken, at a minimum of level B2 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), no later than six months before the expiry of the employment as Associate Senior Lecturer (Assistant Professor). The University of Gothenburg will provide Swedish language courses, which are mandatory as part of the employment. All other requirements for promotion stipulated by the Sahlgrenska Academy must also be fulfilled.

Eligibility

The eligibility criteria for employment as an Associate Senior Lecturer are set out in the Higher Education Ordinance and in the Appointment Procedure for Teaching Posts at the University of Gothenburg.

A person qualified for appointment as an Associate Senior Lecturer (Assistant Professor) is a person who has been awarded a PhD within a relevant field or has the corresponding research expertise. Primary consideration should be given to a person who has been awarded a PhD or achieved the equivalent expertise within seven years of the deadline for application for employment as an Associate Senior Lecturer (Assistant Professor). However, a person who has been awarded a PhD or achieved the equivalent expertise at an earlier date may also be considered if there are exceptional circumstances. Exceptional circumstances are sick leave, parental leave or other similar circumstances. The reasons for the absence, its dates, and its extent must be clearly specified in the application and supported by appropriate documentation.

The ability to teach in Swedish or English is a requirement.

Assessment criteria

The assessment criteria for employment as an Associate Senior Lecturer are set out in the Higher Education Ordinance and in the Appointment Procedure for Teaching Posts at the University of Gothenburg.

Scientific skill is the primary assessment criteria. Pedagogical skill is the secondary assessment criteria. Administrative skill and ability to collaborate is the tertiary assessment criteria.

When assessing scientific skills, special emphasis shall be placed on the ability to conduct research within the subject area of ​​the position. Special emphasis is also placed on peer-reviewed publications in international journals where scientific quality is prioritized over quantity of production. Participation in scientific councils is also taken into account. It is a strong merit if the applicant has a documented ability to obtain external national or international research grants in competition.

When assessing pedagogical skills, special emphasis will be placed on teaching quality and examination skills at undergraduate, advanced and postgraduate levels within the subject area. Also course responsibility, development of teaching assignments and pedagogical material, and good ability to supervise students at all levels of education. The skills must be documented in a way that makes it possible to assess the quality of the pedagogical activities.

When assessing administrative skills, experience in administrative assignments within both research and education is taken into account. Ability to collaborate as well as experience in positions of trust and management, such as leadership, committee work, external assignments, external contacts and popular science communication and interaction, are meritorious.

It is a merit if the applicant has completed a postdoctoral stay away from the university where the applicant completed their doctoral degree and if the applicant has completed basic medical training.

Employment

Fixed-term employment for 4 years, full-time (100 %). Placement at the Institute of Neuroscience and Physiology. Starting date as agreed.

The position as an Associate Senior Lecturer (Assistant Professor) is a fixed-term employment and is defined as a qualifying (career-development) position at the University of Gothenburg. The purpose of the appointment is to provide the appointee with the opportunity to develop independence as a researcher and to build qualifications in both research and teaching in order to meet the eligibility requirements for appointment as a Senior Lecturer. The appointment may be renewed, for a maximum total period of two years, if additional time is required to achieve the purpose of the appointment due to sick leave, parental leave, or other similar circumstances. The requirements for promotion to Senior Lecturer are set out in the assessment criteria adopted by the Faculty Board of the Sahlgrenska Academy.

Other Information

If the applicant does not have formal university pedagogical training at the University of Gothenburg, the applicant is expected to have completed university pedagogical training or acquired equivalent knowledge within one year of the employment date. The assessment of such university pedagogical merits shall be conducted in a special order in accordance with the decision of the Vice-Chancellor.
