Job Description
Initially the successful candidate starts as an Assistant Professor with a qualification agreement for a fixed term tenure phase of six years. After successful completion of the qualification goals, the position will be converted into a permanent Associate Professor position.
The focus of the tenure track professorship will be in the field of molecular microbiology, with a particular focus on the investigation and development of antimicrobial strategies or the investigation of development, dissemination and containment of antibiotic resistance in microorganisms relevant to human health, including increased mechanistic understanding using experimental approaches. The successful candidate is expected to establish and lead an independent research group in this area, based primarily on third-party funding. Active participation in the field of excellence “BioHealth” as well as in the inter-university research networks Cluster of Excellence “MetAGE”, NAWI Graz and BioTechMed-Graz is expected. Furthermore, strong involvement in teaching at the IMB in the field of molecular microbiology is also required, by developing and implementing university courses (at bachelor’s and master’s levels) and the supervision of master’s and doctoral thesis research.
Employment Requirements
- Austrian or equivalent foreign higher education degree corresponding with the position (doctorate/PhD) in the field of Microbiology and/or Molecular Biology or a related field
- Outstanding academic qualifications in research and teaching in the relevant discipline and for the profile of the professorship (commensurate with stage of academic career and interruptions in employment due to caring responsibilities)
- Several years of experience as post-doc or in a similar position
- Skills in attracting subject-specific project grants
- Skills in higher education didactics including the use of digital media
- Gender mainstreaming and diversity management skills
- Professional experience abroad during academic career (preferred)
- Good knowledge of German and English
- International experience in presenting papers and delivering lectures
- A strong research track record in the desired field of research
- Expertise in mechanistic and functional approaches using in vitro cellular models, microbial cultures and/or in vivo animal models
- Proof of academic independence
- Outstanding teaching and supervision skills at bachelor’s and master’s levels
- Strong motivation to work collaboratively and synergise with the IMB’s fields of research
The successful candidate will be highly motivated, aiming for academic excellence and integrity in research and teaching. He/she will have demonstrated ability to collaborate constructively in a responsible manner and inspire colleagues and students in an interdisciplinary, internationally oriented context.
The minimum remuneration as stated in the Collective Bargaining Agreement is € 82,656.00 gross per year after signing the Qualification Agreement.

The Institute of Molecular Biosciences (IMB) is an internationally renowned research and teaching centre that conducts fundamental research at a globally competitive level.
