Project description
The PhD project aims to identify cellular and molecular mechanisms that distinguish regenerative healing from fibrotic tissue repair by comparing two organs with fundamentally different injury outcomes: the endometrium and the myocardium. The studies will use techniques that enable detailed studies at the single-cell level, and will be conducted in laboratory mice as well as in a rodent with unique healing abilities, the African spiny mouse (Acomys spp.). By combining models of myocardial infarction and endometrial fibrosis with single-cell sequencing and detailed tissue characterization, the project aims to identify conserved cellular programs that determine whether damaged tissue heals or develops fibrosis.
The doctoral program covers four years of full-time studies. Other duties at the Department of Medical Cell Biology relating to education and administrative work may occur (max. 20%), which in this case extends the employment by a corresponding period.
Qualification requirements
The prospective doctoral student should have: An academic undergraduate degree, e.g. a master’s degree, in a relevant field, e.g. immunology, endocrinology, microbiology, molecular biology, cell biology or physiology. Excellent knowledge of spoken and written English.
We are looking for a highly motivated PhD student who is enthusiastic about both leading projects and collaborating in the group’s other projects. In the selection process, emphasis will be placed on previous work in a laboratory environment and research experience in physiology, molecular biology, and microbiology, as well as documented experience in the following techniques: mouse handling, anesthesia and dissection, cell molecular methods, advanced flow cytometry, and imaging techniques, such as intravital confocal microscopy. Personal qualifications will be of great importance in the evaluation process.
The application should include a brief description of research interests and relevant experience, a CV, copies of diplomas and transcripts, and the applicant’s thesis (or a draft). If possible, also submit reference letters or contact details of previous research supervisors.
Provisions for doctoral students can be found in the Higher Education Ordinance, Chapter 5, Sections 1-7, as well as in the university’s rules and guidelines.
Application procedure
The application should be written in English and should include a CV, scientific publications, and a personal letter with a short description of yourself, your knowledge and research interests, as well as the names, email addresses and telephone numbers of two references. You should also attach copies of relevant diplomas and course transcripts. Applications will be assessed according to qualifications, personal suitability and previous research experience in related fields.
