Position of Head of the Animal House and Head of the Transgenic Service Facility

The Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg (FAU) is one of Germany’s leading research universities. The Faculty of Natural Sciences is an interdisciplinary research institution with a broad spectrum of life and natural sciences.

We are seeking a dedicated and experienced veterinarian to fill the position of Head of Scientific Services at the Biotechnology Development Laboratory (BTE) as soon as possible. This individual will be responsible for the animal facility and the transgenic service facility.

  The position is generally suitable for part-time work, provided that full-day performance of the tasks is ensured through job sharing.

Your tasks

• Management of the animal shelter and the Transgenic Service Facility
• Scientific teaching (3 hours per week) at the Department of Biology
• Participation in the education and qualification of students
• Participation in scientific projects
• Assumption of the function as responsible person according to § 11 of the Animal Welfare Act for the animal husbandry of the Faculty of Natural Sciences, in particular for the species mouse
• Ensuring species-appropriate, animal welfare-compliant breeding, keeping and care of the laboratory animals
• Personnel management, business organization and budget management
• Organization and coordination of the transgenic unit for the generation of genetically modified animal models
• Compliance, monitoring and further development of the hygiene concept
• Implementation of health management and health monitoring
• Organization of international animal transports
• Management of the veterinary practice’s in-house pharmacy
• Veterinary care of the animal population of the Faculty of Natural Sciences, in particular mice, clawed frogs and zebrafish
• Close collaboration with animal keepers, scientific staff, animal welfare officers and other university interfaces
• Maintenance and management of master data in the animal management software
• Monitoring, optimization and further development of work processes taking into account the 3R principles
• Conducting training courses in laboratory animal science
• Participation in the training of animal caretakers
• Participation in the FAU’s Animal Welfare Committee

Your profile

• Completed studies in veterinary medicine and veterinary license
• Several years of experience in laboratory animal science or in the field of animal experimentation
• Advanced course in laboratory animal science (EU fields of activity A, B, D) and participation in continuing education courses in laboratory animal science
• Experience in handling aquatic laboratory animals is desirable.
• Knowledge of transgenic techniques (e.g., generation of transgenic models, embryo transfer, cryopreservation) is advantageous — can also be acquired on site.
• Specialist veterinarian for laboratory animal science desirable
• Excellent German and English skills, both spoken and written.
• Strong teamwork skills, leadership skills, decision-making ability and independent working style
