The Wernet Laboratory investigates the development, wiring, and function of synaptic connections in the brain using the Drosophila model system. We offer opportunities for scientific work, exchange, and professional development within the framework of a PhD program in an international team. Our research involves participation in several large collaborative projects, including the German Research Foundation (DFG)-funded project FOR5289 ‘RobustCircuit – From imprecision to robustness in neural circuit assembly’. Our research projects are conceptually challenging and aim to open doors to further scientific careers for motivated researchers. Further information can be found at http://www.flygen.org/wernet .
Responsibilities:
The research position offered here is part of the research group/research unit FOR5289 ‘RobustCircuit’ for the study of brain wiring in Drosophila (robuscircuit.org). The aim of our subproject P3, ‘Harnessing promiscuous synaptogenic potential during the assembly of visual navigation circuitry,’ is to study probabilistic contributions to synaptic partner selection during the development of modality-specific neuronal circuits. Methodologically, multi-photon live imaging, connectomics, and molecular genetics will be employed. There is significant scope for developing your own project ideas within this project. The opportunity to pursue a doctorate is available.
Required qualifications:
Completed university degree (Master’s/Diploma) in biology, biotechnology, bioinformatics, or related fields.
Desired qualifications:
– Excellent written and spoken English and German skills.
– Knowledge of and experience with Drosophila as a molecular genetic model organism.
– Knowledge of and experience with molecular or cellular neurobiology.
– Experience in the molecular biological analysis of one or more model organisms is desirable.
