Postdoctoral researcher position in the field of bacterial cell biology

Website Humboldt University of Berlin

Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin is one of the German universities that have been awarded the status of University of Excellence. Located at the Institute of Biology, our research group investigates molecular mechanisms in bacterial cell biology and host-associated microbial systems.

This postdoctoral position is funded by the Einstein Foundation Berlin within a collaborative research project between Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. The project investigates bacterial type III secretion systems (T3SS) and the role of spatial RNA localization in their regulation and function, using genetics, high-resolution imaging, and quantitative analysis.

Your responsibilities

  • scientific services in research within the Einstein Foundation-funded collaborative Berlin-Hebrew University of Jerusalem project, in particular in the field of bacterial cell biology, RNA localization, and type III secretion systems
  • conducting innovative research projects in bacterial cell biology, combining bacterial genetics and molecular biology
  • application of cutting-edge approaches, including advanced live-cell and high-resolution microscopy, quantitative image analysis, and state-of-the-art biochemical and cell biological methods
  • writing of scientific publications
  • presentation of results at scientific meetings and conferences
  • active participation in the Berlin-Jerusalem research collaboration
  • research stays at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem

What you bring to the table

  • completed scientific university degree and doctoral degree (PhD) in microbiology or a related field
  • strong publication record in relevant areas of microbial sciences
  • experience in at least two of the following areas is required: microbiology, bacterial genetics, RNA biology, microscopy, molecular biology
  • experience with quantitative image analysis, RNA-focused methods, or bacterial secretion systems will be considered an advantage
  • knowledge of a scripting language or data analysis tools (e.g. Python, R, or similar) will be considered an advantage
  • ability to work independently and as part of an international collaborative team
  • creative thinking and enthusiasm for developing new experimental approaches and methods
  • proof of an independent working style and a high level of motivation
  • very good command of written and spoken English (at least C1)
